Is it the 6-digit carrier (subsidy) lock code? Or the 4-digit keypad lock code? These are all GSM phones I'm assuming?

Hello Mr StarTac.....My Sincer Thanks are the first words I wish to convey to Yourself for responding to my enquiry..
I also note that your in The United States... all my Worldly friends have been Americans.. however I live in Liverpool England, but I did work in the U.S.A. mainly in Southern California.
The Phones I an still endeavouring to conquer, are 520 GSM systems as also are the 3788 all as you know Motorola.
When I crank them up, the screen asks on some for the Special Code, Eight digits, a few of them say Register Sim... I have tried numerous Sims T.Mobile, and Orange, and also EE. network Sims ... I know that EE, has now immalgamated with Orange and T.Mobile. I Phoned by landline today the EE network, explaining that I wanted the Phones in question un locked, ..so I could use them on subsequent trips to your continent, explaining that I was only using them as a Pay as you Go venture..... I gave them a comprehensive set of IMEI numbers and other relavant information... and every thing seemed to be going favourable in my quest... until he requested £ 25 unlocking fees..... No way Jose ay.... I then told him I had just bought Two brand new Doro 612 phones, with £ 20 credit on them for English use... and with EE network subsciption.. but that didnt perswade him to give me a FREE BEE. I am just a collector thats come across this latest venture... but dedicated once I become embroiled in a project.. hence my initial enquiry. I do wish I could post photographic evidence on this site, You would be astounded at what I have achieved in my life.. I have to sites on FaceBook.. Barry.J.Iddon and Fans of Lizabeth Scott.. take a glance if your free some time.. and I rearly hope we can chat again Mr StarTac. Best regards Barry.

Ok, no problem. Those models look similar to the Timeport. If you're using newer Sim cards for carriers that took over for a previous carrier, the newer Sim cards will often not be recognized by the phone. But moreover, if you do find compatible older Sim cards yet they're not currently activated, you'll get the "unregistered sim" message and the phone will not let you get into the menus. At this point the only solution is to have the phone unlocked either by an unlocking service or you can do it yourself with unlocking equipment or a motorola diagnostic Sim card, which are not easy to find but not impossible either.

Thanks for your analysis of my phone predicament , I can rest assured I gave it my best shot, I have tried umpteen new & used Sims all to no avail....some say register the Sim as its unregistered, other phones ask for eight digit code or special code, I have looked for days around Motorola info, and found a few sitesthat list hard set information, would this avenue be any use....?
I dont realistically wish to lay out Dosh in large sums ; just for the realisation that I have some vintage phones opperative, thats false economy... If I had the ten phones I have all working , that would be an achievment realized , then I would move on to another project... contingency plan 62 ????? thats my life style.... I am a never give up dis-heartened person.. I just soldier on regardless..... I am a Collector Hoarder of Tons of Stuff which includes Vintage Cars.. I have 4 all roadworthy Volkswagen Trekker. 1965. Honda Civic 1975. Citroen " CV, 1966. Vauxhall Viva 1978. all of which are pristine .. one owner vehicles. They keep my Brain ticking over.... the phones were just a diversionary project..

Hi Barryfriendly.
I guess your phone required the 6-digit carrier (subsidy) lock code. (As Mr. StarTAC suspected).
The phone has a SIM lock because it was sold by the carrier (Orange?) very cheap and works with the attached SIM card only. In Germany the locking time was 2 years. Afterwards you could get in contact to the carrier to get the device unlocked.
Best regards Thomas
